Dirtbikes and Handguns

This past weekend, or more like it, Thursday and Friday, were pretty sweet if I do say so myself. First off, we found this sweet little lizard dude running across the driveway and up the house. At first, I thought that he was a baby bearded dragon that had escaped from someone's house, but once we got closer, his spines made it obvious that he was something else. From the photos that I looked at on the internet, I think that he's some variety of Horned Lizard. He wasn't really afraid of us, and after we chased him around with a bucket, took pictures of him, then let him go in the yard, he sauntered past us again in the driveway. With those spines I guess maybe you don't have to be afraid of much. I certainly wouldn't wanna take a bite of him if I was a predator. Ouch!
Next, we took a trip up to La Cueva in the Sangre de Cristos up to a mountain lookout called "Glorieta Baldy." It was beautiful up there at 10,200 feet! There is an old forest service tower that is definitely no longer a safe place to hang out overlooking the town of Glorieta and the Convention Center. Very cool. The trees along the road were really neat, all bent and twisted, and there was a camp ground at the very top situated in a little clearing. Definitely can't get an RV up there so you probably wouldn't have too much company, except for maybe some wild animals.
On Friday, we packed up tons of guns and even more ammo and the dirt bikes and went up to the Glorieta Mesa for the afternoon. We shot clays with the 12 gauges, cans with the 22s, and mostly just a lot of nothing with the handguns. Keith and Kevin practiced being bad asses, shooting with the 45 in one hand and the 40 in the other. I'm not sure that they hit much of anything at all, but they were grinning from ear to ear when they finished! Although I can't say much for my clay shooting ability that day, I definitely could have messed somebody up with the 40. I like that gun. It's fun. Perhaps being a good shot, at least a little bit, is genetic? I like to think it is.

Oh yeah, and after months of saying I was going to, I finally rode a dirt bike! It's pretty much terrifying, but tons of fun! I wish that the little bike that I rode lived in the garage here. Unfortunately it lives in Nebraska. Sad. Better keep saving up my pennies! There are no pictures of me actually riding, so this will have to do for now. I need to work on my posture! Gross. Anyway, I learned that if the dirt bike dies and you're alone, you're pretty much screwed. They're heavy and I'm a wimp. The boys got to me just as I finally got it started and then they had to walk all the way back down the hill. Oops! Good times. The 426 and the 450 are big and they scare me. Perhaps my dirt biking career ended Friday. Nah!

Rodeo!

I finally got Dr. Lynn and Keith to a rodeo! Well, almost a rodeo. It was actually the Professional Bull Riding Discovery Tour, so it wasn't the pros. They were looking for some new crazies to hop onto the back of a 1,500 pound bull whose nuts are tied to his body so that he kicks and thrashes about. Sign me up! Not! Since they were newbies, not that many actually made it all 8 seconds, but a few did. Next time I guess we'll have to go to a REAL rodeo. Here are a few videos of success and failure. See if you can tell which is which!

It's impossible to quantify what one person means to a community. How can you judge what a person's life meant? When they are gone how can you say what's different from before?

The truth is it's impossible. There is no way to properly eulogize someone. You can't sum up a life in 500 words, but there is a way to come close. Collin Keck died on Thursday, Sept. 18 in a bicycle accident, but this was not the end of Collin Keck. He lives on in the recollections of his friends, in the memorial fund that is already drawing donations to build a new bike path to avoid the dangerous stretch of road on which he was killed, and most of all in the credo that he left behind.

A 2008 Engineering School graduate, Keck hailed from Bozeman, Mont. While biking to work in Sumner, Wash., Keck was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Keck's friends describe him as the kind of man who had an easy smile, the kind who is just naturally kind. To hear them talk Keck was a man incapable of cruelty, someone
guided by a desire to see people happy.

"When I think of Collin, his smile is the first thing that pops into my mind," said Amanda McClure, a 2007 graduate who sang with Collin in Big Bing Theory. "Whenever Collin smiled, it was genuine. He meant it and it was completely real. I walked by him on my way to class early every morning one semester my junior year. Even though I could tell that he was talking to his buddies and still half asleep, he always smiled and said (or at least waved) hello. It brightened up my day."

Reflecting on their time in Big Bing
Theory, McClure reminisced on the bonding experiences they shared.

"We spent the weekend after auditions at BBT retreat, learning new music, playing all kinds of get-to-know-you games, and stuffing our faces. At one point, I remember all of us, a lot of whom had just met, snuggling on David Gaines' trampoline. The returning members really wanted to hear us 'newbies' sing, so we did. Lying on our backs under the stars … It was so much fun. We spent hours and hours taking turns singing that night. I remember being so impressed with Collin's voice. I can't tell you exactly what it was, but something about his voice just made me want to listen."

When his friends remember him, it is his voice that seems to come up again and again. The budding engineer seemed to combine artist and scientist when he sang.

"Man, did he have a voice! This guy could sing - he had an incredible voice, and a laugh to match, and just being around him was a joy," said Jen Forsman, class of 2004.

But to reduce his talent to his music is unfair. His friends had more to say about his other talents.

"I later got to know him as a man who was brilliant, fun, very chill and extremely passionate about music. I always felt as though Collin were like my little brother and I know, without a doubt, that he would encourage every last one of us to live for the moment, enjoy where you are and drink life in, just as he did," Claire Mcloy said.

Gonzaga students past and present remember Keck as the prototypical good guy. The one you want your sister to date, the guy whom you can't help but like. Keck left behind more than these strong friendships, he left a template so that others might follow in his footsteps. Collin's list, located at www.collinkeck.com, provides 11 ways that people might better themselves, all "crusades" that Keck embodied in his own life. From things as simple as reading "Three Cups of Tea" to being a steward of the environment, Keck's list provides ways that people can better themselves, and in turn honor Collin's
vision for the world.

As Collin said: "I strongly believe that we are called to use our talents to the betterment of others."

It wasn't hard to find people who loved Collin, and wanted to talk about the way he impacted them. It seems that in fact it was much more of a matter of finding
a stopping place. The Facebook group dedicated to his memory overflows with well-wishers, the memorial Web site contains compliment after glowing compliment. This is where Collin's eulogy really is, in the hearts of his friends and their kind words.

Late? Try One of These!

So, next time you're running late for work, make sure to call your boss and give one of these excuses. Apparently they're tried and true! Start with this...

"Mr. (Boss' name), I apologize for my tardiness this morning. I would have been to work on time, except that..."

1. While rowing across the river to work, I got lost in the fog.

2. Someone stole all my daffodils.

3. I had to go audition for American Idol.

4. My ex-husband stole my car so I couldn't drive to work.

5. My route to work was shut down by a presidential motorcade.

6. I have transient amnesia and couldn't remember my job.

7. I was indicted for securities fraud this morning.

8. The line was too long at Starbucks.

9. I was trying to get my gun back from the police.

10. I didn't have money for gas because all of the pawnshops were closed.

I mean, he HAS to understand. Right?

In Memory of Collin Keck

December 1, 1985-September 18, 2008

This Thursday morning, the 18th of September, my friend Collin Keck was struck by a dump truck and killed while riding his bike to work. He was only 22. News of Collin's death came as a great shock to those of us who knew him. I knew Collin mostly through song. Collin joined BBT, the a cappella group that I sang in in college, the same year that I did. He had an incredible voice and brought amazing energy to the group. Although he was sometimes quiet and slightly more reserved than the rest of us were, Collin quickly became part of the BBT family and a friend to us all. He always greeted each of us as we filed into BBT practice with a big smile and a big hug. He even walked me home after practice so that I didn't have to walk alone in the dark. Although he left the group to spend a year studying abroad in Florece, Italy, Collin continued to keep in touch with us all through the internet and offered words of encouragement before big concerts and events. He was, and always will be, a part of the BBT family, and therefore, a part of my family.

I ask that his family, especially his parents and brother, be kept in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time in their lives.

Collin, thank you. Thank you for being you. Your smile, your voice, and your passion for life will never be forgotten. Above all, thank you for your friendship. I'm grateful for the time that we spent together and am a better person for knowing you. I love you and miss you. We all love you and miss you.

Coexist

Welp, I had a couple of interviews at vet clinics in Salida on Friday, and I'm happy to say that, should I be offered a job by both of them, the choice will be a complete no-brainer. Let me explain... I set up an interview with one of the clinics simply for Friday, no specific time, so when I called at around 11:30 or so to see what time would be best, the interviewer said, "How about right now? I'll take you out for lunch and we can chat." Sweet. She's a new vet, who went to vet school with one of the vets that currently work with at the clinic in NM, and she's awesome! Very down to earth, wanted to chat and get to know me, didn't even really ask me any of the typical interview-type questions. It was definitely the most relaxed, but most effective interview style ever. After, we went to the clinic and I got the grand tour. It's a nice place, with a very personal, small town feel. I like it a lot. I can however, say that the clinic that I work at now is very nice as far as layout and just overall niceness goes. Anyway, I'm supposed to hear back from her this coming week. Wish me luck!

The other interview, if you can even call it that, did not go so well, or maybe it didn't even go at all. The vet who runs the clinic was definitely not with it at all while I was there. I dunno if it's because she really wasn't interested, or she didn't have anything to say, or she doesn't even know what goes on at the clinic that she owns and works at. It was weird. She never really made eye contact, didn't ask any questions, and gave me a half-assed tour. It was werid. I still have to fill out an official application, but I'm really hoping to just hear from the first place before I have to worry about it.

On the way back, we took a longer route so that we could go over the Taos Gorge Bridge, and let me tell you, it was totally worth the added time! I've floated under it a number of times and wanted to see what the river looks like from above, but I never could have guessed how amazing the view was going to be! I wish the photos did it justice, but hopefully you get the point. I'm definitley gonna have to check it out sometime when the river is huge. Yep!
After years of waiting, my bumper stickers have finally found a home. Yay! Now people will have something to read if they're stuck behind me!

Bye bye Montana

Wow, time flew by and, after a long, long drive, I'm back in New Mexico once again. Besides the truck blocking the driveway of a client with an overdue bill that I mentioned in a previous post, there were definitely some other moments that I feel are worth mentioning. First off, my little brother has a girlfriend! Ahhh! Him being old enough for that is definitely something new to me! Yikes! I'm getting old!

Oh yeah, and the family dog, Jackson, is nice again. Who knew? He was such a brat, especially to me, at Christmastime, but he's a pretty cool dog these days. And, much to our surprise, he did really, really well when Hyside and Kona invaded his turf for 3 weeks. He played well with them, shared his toys, and showed them how river dogs are supposed to act around the water! I'm pretty sure that Jackson and Kona fell in love on the trip, though...they would have some crazy babies! They were licking each other's ears and snuggling, very twitterpated activity if I do say so myself! It made Hyside a bit jealous to see his sister playing with someone besides him, but they all made it through with no major incidents! Whew!
Hyside perched on all of our crap in the back of the Subaru. I wish that this photo showed how cramped and ridiculous it was up there!
Kona's a pretty needy little chica in the car.

Sadly, my kayaking skills are no better than they were when I left, but eh well. Hopefully there's still time. Keith and I did R2 a tiny raft down the upper stretch of the river before we had to head back. That was fun! It was definitely a challenge. The water is pretty low and we had a lot of weaving between and around rocks to do! We only had to get out and pull 3 times, which is pretty impressive considering. I guess we are professionals! I even got to wear my wetsuit, as it was absolutely freezing and rainy. That was definitely a good purchase! We, and by we, I mean Keith, also chopped down a couple of burned trees across the river from the house. My dad's been calling him "Paul Bunyan" ever since!

I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get to see more of my friends, who were also in town for various weddings. Hopefully we can catch each other next time. I did get to see on of my GU friends though! Corey, a guy that I rafted with for GU Outdoors, works in Billings as an engineer, but lives in Red Lodge, so I met up with him one night and had a few beers. It was good times! I miss some things about school and GU, so it was nice to make a connection with someone from there and to catch up on what some other people from school are doing these days!

We also got to spend some time in Red Lodge with the Mapps, which was great fun! Lauren is growing up so fast and is so smart, it's incredible! She knows so much more than an almost-2 year old should. For example, we were at Sam's drawing pictures on a little Magna Doodle and showing them to her. I drew one of a penguin, that sort of looked like a penguin, but she totally knew what it was! later, Keith wrote "thanks" on it, and when he showed it to Lauren she said, "abc's!" Most little ones would have just seen scribbles, I think. A very smart little cookie, she is! And too cute!

Well, for now anyway, that sums up my Montana trip pretty well. Can't wait to go back!

Congrats to Kati and Michael

Here are some photos from Kati's wedding festivities. Having spent the last few days before the wedding with the bride-to-be, I can say one thing...elope and get married in Vegas! Seems like it'd save some stress! Kati and her family definitely put mucho, mucho time into all of the planning, and it certainly payed off. Everything was beautiful!
Congrats once again to Kati and Mike!

The bridesmaids and Kati still in her jeans...we definitely destroyed the room getting ready!
First dance and Mr. and Mrs. Scheetz.
Megan and I about to eat dinner!
Mmmm...cake!
Wylee trying to blow out the candle in the glass centerpiece...so cute.

Wedding Season is Upon Us

Wedding season is upon us, or at least upon me. Mike and Val tied the knot 10 days ago, Dana and Nick are following suit on Saturday, Erin and Chris are also saying "I do" on Saturday, and I'm walking down the isle in a blue bridesmaids dress on Saturday as well, in order to be at Kati's side as she and Michael get hitched. Nicole and Gabe are to be wed in Santa Fe in 10 days, too! It's definitely a lot to take in! I don't even know that many people, yet 3 of my girlfriends are getting married on the same day! How inconsiderate...I mean, they should have checked with each other so that I could make it to all the weddings! What were they thinking?

Now that the initial shock has passed, the shock of having to purchase so many wedding gifts, I'm getting excited for all of Kati's wedding shenanigans to begin. I've never been a bridesmaid before! (Hopefully my future as a bridesmaid won't become something worthy of making another movie about! That Kathryn Heigl with all her dresses...) Pre Mrs. Scheetz plans include rafting on Thursday, rehearsal dinner at Johnny Carino's on Friday, then the big event on Saturday afternoon, followed, of course, by the reception, which is sure to be a good time! Pictures to follow, I'm sure.

To sum up this post...
CONGRATS to all of my friends who recently tied the knot or who are doing so in the near future! I love you guys!
